Caring For Your Hardwood Floors

What To Do

Vacuum or sweep your floors daily.  Use a vacuum or dry mop to remove dirt between regular cleanings using a soft cloth dry mop for dust, or soft bristle broom.

General cleaning once a week is recommended.  Slightly damp mop your floor using 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water.  No need to use fancy, expensive products, but you if you want, you can use Pledge Grab It's - these are a NWFA recommended product.

Whatever cleaning product you choose, always make sure it is specifically designed for use on hardwood floors.

Remove spills promptly using a soft, slightly dampened cloth.

Place floor mats at exterior doors to trap sand and grit.  Use area rugs in high traffic pathways, at the ends of steps and near doorways.  Avoid rubber backing or non-ventilated rugs.  Clean mats & rugs regularly.

Use protective parts, caps, or felt glides on the "feet" of furniture.

Maintain humidity in your home between 45% and 55%.  Excessive humidity can cause wood floors to swell, creating cracks in the finish.

What Not To Do

Don't let sand, dirt, or grit buildup.  It can act like sandpaper and actually abrade and dull your floor finish resulting in the need for an accelerated refinishing job.

When damp mopping your floor, do not use excessive water.  Too much water can cause floors to swell or warp.

*Don't use wax, oil soap, or other household cleaners on polyurethane finished wood or laminate floors.  They can dull today's floor finishes and make refinishing difficult.
